Is Mbeki ‘one of the world’s worst Presidents’?

The journalist John Carlin, who reported on South Africa in the early 1990s, thinks so in an op-ed published this past Sunday in Britain’s Observer.
Carlin arrives at the above assessment courtesy of Mbeki’s ‘twisted relationship with AIDS,’ especially the events of the last two months.
The premise of the article is of course over the top ['one of the world's worst presidents'], while he comparison with Mandela is unfair to Mbeki. It could also be argued that Carlin needs the publicity (he is after all writing a book on Mandela for Penguin) but Mbeki’s record on AIDS has been atrocious.

That coming from the country that was ruled by Tony Blair for 10 years, the man who participated in not one, not two, but three wars of aggression during his term of office!

Mbeki may have his faults, but when I look at the presidents and prime ministers of other countries, I really don’t think we are doing too badly!

If Zuma follows, however, we’ll have nothing to crow about.

  2. Erik Ponder says:

So, Mbeki is worst than Bush!? Amazing…what an idiot!

  3. Sean Jacobs says:

    Erik,
    That’s exactly my point.
