African TV on the web

Much is made more recently of the presence of African bloggers on the web and their impact on information flows in the West. However, the same can not be said for that old medium television’s presence online.

I’ve been asking around and checking about African broadcasters with dedicated ‘channels’ on Youtube (to take one of the web platforms) and it seems Kenya’s private NTV stands alone with daily updates and an extensive archive. South Africa’s SABC1 has a channel, but it resembles more shopfront than anything else (it rarely gets updated).

A separate development has been the WebTV applications of newspapers, again mainly from South Africa such as The Times (the paper also has a podcasts feature) and Sowetan TV. I stand corrected. (HT: Wendy Willems)

UPDATE: I just discovered African Loft TV, an online portal for things African.

Don’t know if it qualifies as “African”, maybe more “Afropean” as they say in Paris nowadays -check http://www.grioo.com. Very good, particularly in their coverage of culture – regular interviews with writers, artists etc…

NTV is really trying with African online TV content and I checked their Youtube channel, it has lots of videos with thousands of views.
Our company is really working tirelessly to bring live qualitative African to the web. Because we believe the demand exists.
