The University of Massachusetts in Armherst this week took back the honorary degree it bestowed on the Zimbabwean despot in 1986, when he “… appeared to be a force for positive change in Africa.” Zimbabweans who suffered under his excesses during the 1980s say that earlier reputation is undeserved since Mugabe’s regime by 1982 (one year after Independence from a white minority dictatorship) presided over the murder of more than 20,000 people (exclusively black) in Matabeleland province, a stronghold of his political rivals at the time.
The University of Edinburgh had previously rescinded the honorary degree it granted Mugabe in 1984. There is no pressure on Michigan State University to take back an honorary doctorate it bestowed on Mugabe in 1990. [Source]
I took a class at Amherst Umass last semester. My professors are so ashamed of what Mugabe is doing. They fought to get him that honorary and now he has disgraced the nation.
