Long before Barack Obama there was a real Black President. Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the man who claimed to carry death in his pouch, had the Nigerian junta of the 1970s and 1980s on the run and whose devotees was only rivaled by Bob Marley on the African continent.
Now there’s more news about “Fela!,” the Bill T Jones musical that attempts to bring Fela’s music to life. Details of the run is now known: previews starts next Tuesday at 37 Arts, on West 37th Street in Manhattan, and then it has a short two-and-a-half-week engagement starting September 4. The New York Times has a decent piece by reporter Ben Sisario (you may need to register to see it) of rehearsals for the show.
The article is accompanied by a slideshow is part. It is also accompanied by a link to video where Jones describe Fela as “an uncompromising sacred monster.”
I hope I can get tickets.
I’d love to see that. Of course, a fan.
But isn’t that man a bit tooo muscley for Fela? Or am I being unfair?!
