Writer Damon Galgut commenting on his new novel, The Imposter, talks about the new South Africa:
‘… “[H]ow much is the new South Africa an impostor, too?” Yes, since the early 1990s, one no longer needs to feel ashamed to be South African, Galgut observed. But the notion that it’s now a country of human rights with a “rainbow population … where reconciliation has triumphed” is a myth. In fact, “there are all kinds of divisions and contradictions playing out. … The heroes of yesterday’s liberation movements are the cabinet ministers of today and they’re an extremely flawed and compromised lot. I think we’re in totally new territory now in South Africa. It’s a reign of ambiguity, contradiction and nuance … I’m quite at home there.” ‘
Dear Sean:
Great to see Damon’s book getting out there a bit. Are you in the US? You seem to post a lot about NY or at least its media. I am with Damon’s American publisher, our edition comes out in a few weeks.
Amy
