M.I.A., the British-Sri Lankan (hip hop?) artist, recently told Tavis Smiley, the PBS talk show host, that the Sri Lankan government engages in “systematic genocide” of the country’s Tamil minority. While human rights organizations agree that the government is guilty of human rights abuses against Tamils, not surprisingly many think M.I.A.’s hyperbole does not help.
Predictably a Sri Lankan government official took exception (as the video above shows). And of course, he did not let an opportunity go by to repeat his government’s scorched earth policy against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
For some context, I suggest this recent piece by Sri Lankan commentator, Sumedha Senanayake.
