Last night at MoMA’s Documentary Fortnight. This is the film about the artist Vanessa Beecroft who wants to adopt two Sudanese orphaned twin babies. And then while waiting to adopt them, uses them in her art. I wanted to see this, but had to cancel. A friend, a documentary filmmaker herself, who still went and saw it, sent me this take on the film:
“… You should have seen it. The whole film was quite a cringe-fest for me and I was so relieved that she wasn’t able to adopt the twins. It’s one those moments where I just felt that white people should stay the hell out of Africa. I think the film makes quite a strong case against international adoption. But despite that, I was quite interested in Vanessa as an artist — how that kind of narcissism is perhaps necessary for success at that level. It’s all very bizarre. She wants the babies, but she is not at all maternal and has 2 children already in New York that are pretty much being raised by a nanny. She jets all over the world without spending much time with them . . . She doesn’t share her adoption plans with her husband until she absolutely has to. Weird marriage too. As documentary film though — very good.”
