FESPACO, the premier continental African film festival is on now in Burkina Faso. But to see the films showcased there in the West and on African cinema screens or television, still remains a huge challenge. I’ve seen a statistic that foreign films make up just two percent of all new releases on American screens. What to do? One option is to go online. Take the Africala Film Festival which you can watch online. Sponsored by Air France, the journal Africultures, The Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia and Hot Sun Films based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The short films are: director Rogerio Manjate’s “Eu te Amo” (Mozambique), Aryan Kaganof’s “Song for Hector” (South Africa), Ravneeth Chadh’s “Subira” (Kenya), Daddy Ruhorahoza’s “Confession” (Rwanda), Ricky Joaquim’s “Street Story” (South Africa), Benjamin Wilson’s “Wilson, a day in the life of a street kid” (Uganda), Shaun Hill’s “Red Rose” (South Africa), and Diek Grober’s “Agenda” (South Africa).
Worth a visit.
