You knew that somehow I would up bring Lauryn Hill. Not as a female MC, but as an MC. Period. She was “The Score” (1996) and “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (1998) is a classic. This Rolling Stone piece on the 10th anniversary of the “The Miseducation… ” gives a good account of its impact. (Even, hip hop artist Chris Rock agrees: “This is a masterpeice of a record. I know there’s a lot of singing on there, but there’s a lot of rapping, too. People don’t have a problem with conscious rap; they have a problem with conscious beats. If you make some ignorant beats, you can say all the smart shit you want.”)
I won’t say more. And will leave her post-”The Miseducation …” career alone.
Here’s she performing “Ex-factor,” the 3rd song off the “The Miseducation …” album, live.
