Al Jazeera’s documentary series, People and Power, starts a new five part series, Corporations on Trial, today:
“In a special five-part series People & Power charts the rapidly growing number of lawsuits being brought against multi-national corporations. War crimes, conspiracy, corruption and payments to terrorists are just some of the serious charges that have forced some of the world’s largest companies to hire high-profile defence lawyers to defend their name in cases often brought by plaintiffs who are barely literate. The episode above, “Dumping Ground,” is being shown today for the first time on Al Jazeera English, considers the case against Trafigura, the world’s third largest independent oil trader, by human rights lawyer, Martyn Day, on behalf of 30,000 Ivorians. It is the largest class action in British history.
As my friend Dan Moshenberg points out the world’s poor are anxious, and have decided to share that with the elites, by making them anxious, perhaps, in court.
BTW, while on the subject, check out this website that provide information about ‘liability risks’ for companies that operate in ‘high risk zones.’
