CNN International’s weekly magazine program on Africa, “Inside Africa,” recently did a short feature on The New York African Film Festival. Clips and interviews with film directors Michael Raeburn, Xoliswa Sithole, Lupito Nyong’o and festival director Mahen Bonetti. (Mahen, by the way, remains a tireless champion for African film in New York City, something she does not always get the necessary credit for).
But the festival is not over. The CNN feature only focused on the Lincoln Center leg of the festival which runs at the end of April (for 16 years in a row now).
Every year the festival moves onto the Brooklyn Academy of Music, a number of outdoor summer screenings around the five boroughs and a national “traveling series.”
The BAM screenings run from tonight through Monday and is worth checking out. (It coincides with the annual Dance Africa Festival which transforms the area next to BAM every Memorial Day weekend to a large flea market).
