Akoya is certainly one of the best Afrobeat Revival Bands around.Duke Mseleku, the guy blowing the pipe is a Thekwini Homeboy and a great sax player following in the footsteps of his late uncle,Bheki Mseleku.
Samboerou,
I met Duke recently at the South African restaurant in Brooklyn, NY. He told me about the band. I didn’t want to be obvious about the connect. Well spotted.
Akoya is also one of the few U.S Afrobeat bands with a direct connection to the Shrine, with their bandleader Kaleta having played in Fela’s band. Also check out his other band,Kaleta and the Zozo Afrobeat. What I find great about Duke is that he has never confined himself to any particular style,as a Jazz scholar he mostly played in Reggae bands and now the Afrobeats. There is a nice You Tube vid where Akoya plays with Cedric “IM” Brooks, the king of ReggaeJazz innovation, who himself recorded some great Afrobeat tracks, where Duke intro’s with him.Good to watch the Homeboy closing the circle.
Good words about Akoya Afrobeat Ensemble, thank you so much for your encouragements, and hope to see you at our next live shows. You can listen to the music at ( http://www.myspace.com/akoyaafrobeat ) and dates.
Star Wars and Fela Dey are two of my favorite songs. Probably the onlys songs I have listened to this many times are Chant A Psalm (dub) by Steele Pulse, and Bukowski by Modest Mouse. If I were to make a “mix tape” of my favorite songs these would all be on it.
Other than Fela Kuti, does anyone know of some good bands that sound like Akoya?
I will check out Kaleta and Zozo as one poster suggested.
Hey, whoever is running this joint, I am trying to get hold of Duke Mseleku. We went to the same school in eThekwini. I am desperately trying to get hold of the brother. I am currently in Boston, for a year. Will be coming to NYC quite often. Would be nice to hook up with Duke. Fred Khumalo

The banana diet broke onto the scene in Japan with such
force that many grocery stores the next day literally ran out and could
no longer provide anyone with the fruit. When you tend to try this kind of diet, make sure that you are able
to.
