The online edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education has a link to William
Saletan ‘odious reprise‘ of the entire arsenal of Victorian scientific
racism in Slate.
The tag for the link is ‘… James Watson was forced to retire after he claimed that African intelligence wasn’t “the same as ours.” Was he wrong? William Saletan writes on race and IQ.’
Watson is now honored as a martyr in some rightwing and conservative quarters (claiming victimization, political correctness, and inconclusive evidence). As the friend who noticed the Chronicle item, observed: the Chronicle has been moving to the hard right, but this is an odd stance.
Similarly, in this week’s New York Times Book Review, a review of Watson’s new book (during promotion of which he made his racist remarks that black people are less intelligent than whites) treats him like some benign old man. If only.
